Just when you thought Da Nang was running out of real estate to expand upon, word on the street is decision-makers are gearing up to consider extending the city’s incredible growth into the sea.
According to VN Express, on April 25, Nguyen Van Quang, the Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee, announced that the city is exploring an ambitious project to build a floating city with five artificial islands.
Yes, you read that right — Da Nang could soon look a little like Dubai.
The plan would extend the city’s coastline by nearly 48 kilometers and aims to transform Da Nang into a major global center for finance, commerce, and services. Officials say the design could resemble the famous marine urban developments seen in Dubai — think sweeping islands, luxury buildings, and an entirely new skyline rising out of the sea.
According to Quang, this project has strong support from Vietnam’s highest levels of government, including General Party Secretary To Lam. If it moves forward, Da Nang could become the country’s first-ever “sea city,” positioning it as a heavyweight not only in Vietnam but also on the global map.
And that’s not all — the National Assembly is expected to discuss creating international financial centers in both Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, alongside a potential free trade zone right here on the coast.
Officials hope these moves will attract significant investment, spark sustainable growth, and bring a highly skilled international workforce to the city.
Of course, a project of this size comes with numerous questions — from investment logistics to environmental impacts — but one thing is for sure: the vision for Da Nang’s future is bigger and bolder than ever before.
Let’s hope a waterpark is in the plans!
